Per Diem Mechanic

Summary 

The person in this position is a champion for safe, reliable, and efficient bicycles that meet the needs of a wide range of cyclists. They support the mechanical repair and tuning processes at the Bike Hub. This includes handling individual repairs based on owner requests and their own assessment. Strong mechanical bike skills are critical as are super communication skills and the ability to interact with a wide variety of customers and a diverse work and volunteer team. Leading this work in a new organization also requires creativity, flexibility and enthusiasm for the mission of getting more people cycling. Our Bike Hub (www.ourbikehub.com) is a new, charitable organization dedicated to creating a vibrant, healthy community by making cycling accessible and affordable to all and empowering youth. Our Vision is that the tri-state region around Bennington, Vermont will have a dynamic cycling community where bikes are accessible to all, where health and wellness are celebrated, where young people are empowered, and where cycling is a lifelong activity. Duties 

  • Public Face - Be an ambassador of Our Bike Hub demonstrating the principles of health, learning, and community in daily work. 
  • Safety Focus - Build and lead a culture of safety within the shop and in the community. 
  • Mechanical Repair and Tuning - Manage and implement individual repairs to bicycles based on owner input and evaluation of the bicycle. 
  • Teacher and Learner - Share your knowledge with customers and other team members to help extend the impact of the organization while also pursuing continuous improvement of yourself through learning and development opportunities. 
  • Retail Operations - Provide sales support for customers in the shop, complete transactions, support inventory management and financial operations with good record keeping and communication.  


Skills 

  • Communication - Excellent written, verbal, and/or visual communication skills in support of a team working on a common mission. 
  • Mechanical Aptitude - Attention to mechanical detail and skills to support reliable, safe and complete repairs and adjustments to bicycles allowing for safe use and enjoyment. For example, Routine maintenance, wheel building and truing, bearing adjustment and replacement, bottom bracket installation.  
  • Organization - Maintain order in a shop that has a wide variety of different parts and establish systems that enable volunteers to find, use, and organize parts as well. 
  • Business - Manage daily operations of a retail shop including basic sales support, point of sale, inventory management, and cash register operation.  


Details 

  • Reports to: Chair - Board of Directors (presently), eventually a paid General Manager.
  • Hours: Per diem, Core weekend business hours Th-Sa 10-6,  4-12 hours per week. 
  • Wage: Depending on experience, $20-25 per hour, potential to grow to a salary position as the organization develops. 
  • FLSA: Non-exempt. Timing: Open until filled.
